Glossary of Professional Titles

The following are Initials and descriptions of the most commonly used designations for professionals. We are providing these as often are seen titles when describing a persons education or capabilities and no explanation is used defining the initials or titles after their name. The use of this title or initial will tell the education they have had.

A.R.T.C.

Associate of the Royal Conservatory, Toronto Canada. Requires completion of a degree in music.

B.S. or B.Sc.

Bachelor of Science

C.C.H.

Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist

C.H.T.

Certified healing Touch Practioner. Requires completion of a full course in healing touch.

C.M.T.

Certified Massage Therapist; Requires completion of an accredited school of massage and completion of a set number of clinical hours.

C.R.T.

Certified Rebalancing Therapist; A structural integrative bodywork requiring a minimum of 800 hours of training with accredited program and certification with the Osho International Academy of Healing Arts.

C.A.

Certified Armoatherapist

Dipl. Ac.

Diplomate Acupuncture. Designation issued by the National Commission for Certification for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (U.S.A.) Must be a graduate of an accredited school or clinical equivalent. At least 1,700 hours of training.

D.D.

Doctorate of Divinity - a minister

D.D.S.

Dentist

D.C.

Doctor of Chiropractry; Requires completion of an accredited colleg and board exams and state licensing.

D.O.

Doctor of Osteopathy

H.M.D.

Homeopathic Medicine Doctor; A one year course with weekend intensives.

L.M.T.

Licensed Massage Therapist; Some states require a business license for practicing massage.

L.P.C.

Licensed Professional Counselor; Requires a Masters Degree and 2 years of supervised practice.

M.A.

Master of Arts; A post graduate study and completion of thesis.

M.D.

Medical doctor; Requires 4 years post B.A. or B.S. medical school and 3 years clinical residency.

M.I.

Master of Iridology; Requires completion of the course at the School of Natural medicine, Cambridge, England.

M.S.

Master of Science. A degree of post graduate study usually meaning one has focused upon a narrow course of study to learn its details. More intensive than an M.A.

M.T.

Massage Therapist (NY state designation)

Na.

Naturopath (NY); Requires apprenticeship with an M.D.

N.C.T.M.B.W.

National Certification for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork; Requires graduation from an accredited school and 1000 hours of clinical and written tests.

N.M.T. or A.N.M.T.

Neuromuscular Massage Therapist or Advanced Neuromuscular Massage Therapist; Requires additional specific training beyond basic massage therapy school.

N.Ph.

Natural Physician; Requires completion of a course of study at School of Natural medicine, Cambridge, England.

N.P.

Nurse Practioner; Requires R.N. and completion of an accredited course of specific study.

O.B.P.

Oriental bodywork practioner.

Ph.D.

Post Masters study with completion for a dissertation.

P.T.

Physical Therapist; Requires 2 year post graduate course and board exam.

R.Ac.

Registered Acupuncturist; Requires completion of an accredited school of acupuncture.

R.N.

Registered Nurse; Requires at least a B.S. in Nursing and Board exam.
