NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
|
Naturopathic Medicine is what many refer to as "common sense" medicine and is a term which covers many components of good health including fresh air (recommended as best), clean water, balanced diet (without meats of any kind) exercise (in moderation - just enough to keep one in shape and fitness), and "right living". Practitioners may prescribe acupuncture, herbalism, nutrition therapy, homeopathy, osteopathy, hydrotherapy or diet. Whatever the diagnosis and recommendation, Naturopaths believe illness is natural and a "cure" should be founded on natural principles. Naturopathy was originally coined by the German pioneer Benedict Lust who emigrated to the U.S. in 1892. His concepts were based on the ideas of his predecessor, Vincent Preissnitz.
Certified Naturopaths may complete a four-year program or equivalent of study or they may be someone with nothing more than a diploma from a "diploma mill" or a correspondence school. They may also have a certificate/diploma from an independent N.D. who teaches and practices. A licensed Naturopathic physician on the other hand, must attend a 4 year naturopathic medical school, after 3 years of standard pre-med, and then sit for board exam in a state that grants a license to practice naturopathic medicine. The point being about all this is to check out the the person with whom you are working. Feelings are most important also.
