Alternatives to Liver Disease
Read Notice

By Brian Thomas Hill, Ph.D. in Alternative Therapy

The American Medical Association recognizes that Alternative medicine is here to stay and a real threat to modern medicine. Doctors reluctantly bow to their own ignorance regarding this ancient resurgence. Most Colleges providing Medical school, now teach many forms of Alternative medicine. For almost a hundred years, Modern Medicine has shunned Herbal medicine. These new efforts to understand and to incorporate new wisdom into a bankrupt understanding of modern Medicine, as we know it today, only convince us that the Ancient civilizations were far more advanced in many ways than we are today.

Not too long ago a friend of mine came to me shaken explaining that his physician had determined through all of the appropriate tests that he was dying of Cirrhosis of the liver due to Viral Hepatitis. His Doctor tried to make his decisions easy by informing him that there were limits to his treatment that suggest he might as well just enjoy life, and die. So for the past few months he has been doing just that, dying. When I suggested that there might be another choice, he was almost annoyed. His attitude is extremely common among patients. For that matter, this attitude is still prevalent among my family members. The thought that a plant could heal better than a pill seems impossible. Let us not even add into the picture, God, or the power of the human spirit!

The truth is that science synthesizes herbs into most of the drugs we use in every day living. Aspirin was first invented using one herb (White Willow) later finding the same properties in a more abundant plant known as Meadowsweet, Bayer Aspirin has become the only miracle cure known to modern medicine.

Do not let the thought of Reye's syndrome fool you either. There is no real conclusive evidence to say that Bayer Aspirin was responsible for the disease. The whole Idea is ridiculous; Reye's Syndrome typically follows an acute viral infection. Epidemiological studies show that children found with this disease had an increased use of aspirin. Dah! They had the flu, so Mom gave them aspirin. Mom gave aspirin, because she knew full well that it was the only drug that worked. The fact that children died from the disease after taking the aspirin just shows that they were not given the right drug, and that the choice was made because of popular belief in the drug. If you want to know of a dangerous drug to give your child, Tylenol is the drug parents should fear. Tylenol stays in the liver, and accumulates to a poisonous state, being one of the only drugs we know that will cause cirrhosis of the liver all by its self. The thought that anyone other than a Doctor or (now here is a frightening thought when you consider their education) a Nurse could possibly know anything, still causes a great deal of concern.

My friend was set to die, and I had upset his plans. Although this idea of giving up was not really a part of my friend's life plans now were they. These were the failings of the Doctor that was treating him, not just to help his patient understand life, but his failings in helping his patient to openly understand all of his possibilities for treatment. Below is a simple list of ideas that I gave to my friend.

Liver Tonic and Treatment.
Milk Thistle----- This is by far the most impressive of the herbs for the treatment of and prevention of Liver damage. The main Chemical ingredient is Silymarin, which is thought to be at least ten times more potent in Antioxidant activity than vitamin E. Silymarin increases the glutathione (GSH) content of the liver by over 35% in healthy subjects, and increases considerably the level of the important antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase in cell cultures. Glutathione is responsible for detoxifying a wide range of hormones, drugs, and chemicals. By increasing glutathione, the liver has a greater capacity for detoxification reactions.

In one study involving Amanita phalloides (the deathcap or toadstool mushroom) the most powerful liver-damaging substance we know, killing 30 % of all victims, Silymarin proved 100% effective in completely counteracting the poison when it was given ten minutes after ingestion. Silymarin was also found 100% effective in preventing the poison from working when given prior to ingestion of the mushrooms. Another interesting fact about Milk Thistle is its ability to stimulate protein synthesis. Thus suggesting that Milk Thistle or more specifically Silymarin exert both a protective and restorative effect on the liver. (Note: It has been brought to our attention this is best taken two weeks, then stopped for two weeks before resuming as the body will get use to it.)

Standard dosage: (70-210 milligrams three times a day, depending on the strength. Best results from Alcohol-free-based extracts) 140 milligrams of silymarin three times a day

Dandelion root----- enhances the flow of bile, improving liver congestion, bile duct inflammation, hepatitis, gallstones, and jaundice. Dandelion causes contraction and release of stored bile, and with its high Chlorine content, has a tonic action, improving liver function.
Dandelion root also acts on Diabetes helping to prevent sudden and severe fluctuations. Dandelion root & leaves are also thought to reduce the amount of sugar in the blood. Since Dandelion is a diuretic, it also works on the kidney aiding in the flushing of the system. Don't panic though, Dandelion is high in potassium, so as long as it is kept in check and an occasional banana or fresh vegetables are eaten there is little to worry about.

Dosage:
4-8 milliliters of juice or fresh root (1-2 teaspoons)
2-8 grams of Dried root, in a tea (infusion or decoction)
4-8 milliliters of Fluid extract (1:1) (1-2 teaspoons in water or any drink.)
250-500milligrams in a Powdered solid extract (4:1)

Turmeric---- is a perennial herb of the ginger family, with significant antioxidant activity comparable to standard antioxidants such as vitamins C and E! The anticancer effects of turmeric and curcumin (the primary components) have been demonstrated at all steps of cancer formation: initiation, promotion, and progression. Several studies suggest that curcumin can also promote cancer regression. Curcumin has also exhibited hepatoprotection similar to that of glycyrrhizin and silymarin against carbon tetrachloride and galactosamine-induced liver injury. Curcumin prevents the liver enzymes SGOT and SGPT, commonly seen in experimental models of inflammation. Curcumin is an active choleretic, increasing bile acid output by over 100 percent. In addition to increasing biliary salts, cholesterol, and bilirubin, curcumin also increases the solubility of bile, suggesting a benefit in the prevention and treatment of cholelithiasis.

Dosage:
Since turmeric demonstrates such exciting properties, and since turmeric is a common spice used in many Mediterranean dishes, it is safe to say that it may be consumed quite liberally. When used medicinally the dosage should be increased to between 400 and 600 milligrams three times a day. Combining with Bromelain seems to enhance absorption. Since both Turmeric and Bromelain have anti-inflammatory effects, this may have an added advantage.

Aloe Vera Gel or juice or dried powder ----- an Ayurvedic estrogenic used as a vitalizing tonic for women. For being as old a remedy and as world-renowned as Aloe is, there is very little to say about its actual treatment of the liver. For Centuries in India and in North America Aloe has been a part of Healing traditions for centuries, as a cleansing aid for the liver during Female Menstruation. According to Ayurvedic tradition, a teaspoon of Aloe Vera Powder with a teaspoon of Turmeric, counteracts the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. One should take this preparation over a period of at least three months to regulate liver functions. Studies suggest that Aloe has no affect on AZT other than to aid in the drugs manifestation during the early stages of HIV, with little help in ARC, and almost no help in AIDS. Aloe juice and gel is successful in treating Peptic Ulcers and most Gastrointestinal disorders. Some Clinicians believe that the gel is most effective as a cleanser for the Liver, Spleen, and Pancreas. European studies show that Aloe acts to simulate the immune system and the gel may reduce blood sugars. Aloe has a lightening enzyme-promoting activity that aids in all of its uses. The powder is Contraindicated for patients with severe degenerative liver damage, although it is not sure whether the gel or juice is harmful, since they are not typically used to treat liver problems and the powder is. The Gel and the Juices of the past were not well regulated and many were completely ineffective due in part to extraction processes. They also contained pectin which when ingested could cause abdominal cramping. Now however most of the products sold on the market are free of pectin and more carefully cultivated and processed.

Dosage:
No more than a quart a day, more specifically though it is felt those 2 ounces four times a day is sufficient.
1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of the powder three times a day.

Immune System Stimulant
Ginseng----- has been used for centuries in China and Southeast Asia as an immuno-stimulant, and sexual aid. Recent studies have shown that it also has confirmed hypoglycemic (i.e., blood sugar- lowering) activity. In nondiabetic individuals, ginseng increases the serum cortisol levels, whereas in diabetics the serum cortisol levels are reduced. When fatal doses of poison were given to experimental animals pretreated with ginseng, they all survived. In Human studies 24 Elderly people suffering from cirrhosis, liver damage from alcohol, liver functions were improved.

Dosage:
For best results read the label and find a product from a root, that is at least six years old. Take ½ to 1 teaspoon of the dried powder twice a day for a month. One suggestion is for 3 ounces of powder an ounce of honey and 60 drops of wintergreen blended into a tea using one teaspoon to a cup of water. Just before the water boils add the ingredients and turn off the fire, letting it sit for ten minutes, and drink it before each meal.

Barberry---- studies show that the main ingredient berberine, activates the macrophages (literally, "big eaters"), white blood cells that devour harmful microorganisms. Barberry is an Amerindian "Old Woman's medicine" since it was typically used as stomach and liver agent. By enhancing the flow of bile through the liver and gallbladder, the entire function of the liver is improved. Enhancing the flow of bile through the liver and gallbladder purifies the blood toxins.

Dosage:
One part Barberry and one part Dandelion with a quarter part fennel for flavor.

Chamomile---- prevents infection by stimulating the immune system's white blood cells (macrophages and B-lymphocytes).

Echinacea---- Being one of the best infection fighting herbs, once used to preserve meats before refrigeration, Echinacea boosts white blood cells to the area to engulf and digest the invading pathogens. One study by the University of Munich showed Echinacea extracts increase production of T-cells (T-lymphocytes) up to 30 % more than other immune-boosting drugs.

Dosage:

Ginger---- shrinks liver tumors in animal testing, used in China and India to fight the flu and common cold symptoms. Impairs cholesterol absorption and stimulates the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids. Ginger, like garlic and onions, inhibits platelet aggregation. An aqueous extract of ginger was shown to exert greater inhibitory effects on platelet aggregation than aqueous garlic and onion did. Ginger alone, reduced platelet lipid peroxide formation significantly. Ginger is commonly used for motion sickness and nausea and vomiting. Studies done for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and muscular or joint pain, using Ginger showed that 75%of those patients with arthritis and 100% of the patients with muscular or joint discomfort had significant relief of pain and swelling.

Dosage:
In India, Ginger is commonly consumed at a daily dose of between 8- 10 grams, however most of the research utilized one gram of dry powder.

Oats---- commonly used as a nervine and tonic. Some believe that the oats somehow aid the sheaths surrounding the nerves. More recently, however studies are showing that Oats are helpful in lowering cholesterol, and cleansing the liver. Whatever the reality Oats are what we have given to the sick and weak since they were first discovered, to help them get back on their feet. The cliche' "He's sure feeling his oats now," was used to explain a horses high spirits when fed on oats. They are also good for depression.

Dosage:
Have a bowl of the porridge at least once a day and up to three times a day.

St. John's Wort----- Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Pliny all administered St. John's wort in treatment of many illnesses. St. John's wort, the poor mans Prozac, shows remarkable antiviral activity including against the Epstein-Barr virus. It appears to have a significant effect against the immunodeficiency virus (HIV) oddly though requiring light to activate the main ingredient hypericin. Research suggests that ST. John's wort may be useful in the treatment of herpes simplex, mononucleosis, and influenza, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The greatest promise of St. John's wort however is its effects on increasing helper T cells in Aids patients. Some warnings exist but are unsubstantiated with regard to MAO-inhibiting drugs, cheese, beer, wine, pickled herring, yeast, and tyramine containing foods. One study, mice were infected with the viruses that cause leukemia, and given a single injection of St. John's wort extract. It "totally prevented disease." It was equally effective when given to the mice orally. Preliminary results show that it will have a similar result with the HIV virus. Although many more tests must be done to promote its use against the deadly aids virus, it is certain that some day in the near future St. John's wort will be used as a some part of a cure. One reason for its expected success is its ability to cross the blood/brain barrier, which is necessary to be able to treat the AIDS VIRUS. One side effect may be a slight sensitivity to sunlight. Otherwise, this herb is one of the best drugs on the market for dealing with depression. Not even Prozac comes close to being as effective.

Dosage:
1-2 teaspoons of dried herb per cup of boiling water. Steep 10- 15 minutes. Drink up to three cups per day

Basil---- increases the production of disease fighting antibodies 20%.

Boneset---- stimulates white blood cells to fight bacterial and viral infections.

Gotu Kola---- extensively used in India, Indonesia, and Java, to heal wounds and relieve leprosy. The leaves used to treat boils and fevers, while the plant treats fractures, contusions, strains, and snakebites. Gotu Kola is also a treatment for burns, cellulite, keloids, sceroderma, and disorders of the veins, and cirrhosis of the liver. Studies show that in cirrhosis patients, there were improvements in the histological findings and there is a regression of inflammatory infiltration. However, there were no effects observed in the patients with chronic hepatitis. One of the overlooked but not undiscovered actions of Gotu Kola is its ability to enhance the connective tissue structure of the connective tissue sheath that surrounds veins, reducing hardening in the veins and improving the blood flow through them.

Dosage:

60-120 Milligrams a day of Standardized extract
2-4 grams a day of crude dried plant leaves
2-2 milliliters a day of Fluid Extract.

Marsh Mallow---- In one recent experiment, marsh mallow enhanced white blood cells' ability to devour disease microbes (phagocytosis).
Dosage:
½ to 1 teaspoon of chopped or crushed root per cup of water for 10 to 15 minutes, up to 3 cups per day.

Below is a list of food's that considered healthy for any situation.
Cooking oil
Olive Oil---- Considered by the American Heart association and the AMA as the only heart smart oil.
Juices
Diabetic or unsweetened
Grape---- purple grape juice made from concord grapes may possibly aid in increasing the high-density lipids.
Cranberry---- without the sugar, possibly with fructose, works to clean the kidneys, prevent the development of bacteria in the bladder and kidney, and prevent the development of kidney or bladder stones.
Diabetes aids.
Celery seeds------ Reduce blood sugar, treats High blood pressure and Congestive Heart failure.
Pain and discomfort
Meadowsweet------ Both of these herbs were used in the invention of the only true miracle drug Aspirin, Meadowsweet
White Willow------ winning out in the end.

Cancer Prevention & Blood Pressure Management

Garlic---- The very first written prescription ever was for Garlic and was chiseled in cuneiform on a Sumerian clay tablet over five thousand years ago. Fifteen pounds of Garlic once bought a male slave in ancient Egypt, oaths were sworn over it, and King Tutankhamen was buried with it. Garlic was believed by the Egyptians to prevent illness and increase strength. During the construction of one pyramid, garlic supplies were short, and when the Egyptians cut the slaves rations, they ended up with the first recorded strike in history. Garlic reduces blood sugar levels in both laboratory animals and humans. In one study researchers separated mouse tumor cells into two groups. One group of tumor tissue was left alone. The other was treated with allicin (the main ingredient in Garlic). Then both batches were injected into the mice. The mice that received the untreated cells quickly died, but there were no deaths in the mice that received the garlic treated tumor cells. Chinese tests suggest that Garlic reduces the risk of stomach cancer.

Garlic is one quick way to rid oneself of a cold or the flu, just chew one clove and within an hour, symptoms should subside. During World War I Garlic, juice was prescribed to treat amoebic dysentery. In World War II when supplies of Penicillin ran short on the Russian front, where more than 20 million casualties were in need of antibiotics, Russian physicians turned to Garlic. Later Garlic would come to be known as the Russian Penicillin.
Dosage:
Many new products on the market will provide the appropriate amount of allicin and eliminate the odors associated with the herb. Taken by the clove, the herb must be chewed in order to release the allicin. If it is cooked it should be left in large chunks and under cooked or the allicin is cooked away. There are several tricks that can be used to obtain the allicin, one is to chop it up fine and add it to ones Taco lettuce. Another is to add it to Parsley and dice it finely mixing it in a salad. Adding Parsley helps to reduce the odor and has its own side benefits. Or for the brave, just pull off a clove and chew it down. I recommend you have a flavorful drink standing by.
