Genetically Modified Foods/Seeds

Do you know what you are eating? Is it what you think it is? Think again!
You should be concerned as these foods could be very dangerous to your health!

What are GM foods? They are foods in which the genes have been modified or manipulated by Human means so that they exhibit characteristics other than what they would in their natural state. In our opinion, GM is not bad, but the part we do not like is that the companies doing GM, and they are some of the largest, appear not to care a whit about peoples health but for their bottom line - making huge profits. We're not adverse to profits, but we are concerned that these companies, and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) have not taken the time to adequately test these foods and seeds. The main question is: What reaction does the Human system have with these, and how long does it take before negative (if any) symptoms to appear?

Over the past decade, genetically modified food has become increasingly common as scientists are designing the genes of many fruits and vegetables in an attempt to resist frost, withstand herbicides and even produce their own pesticides. According to a recent article in Time Magazine (September 13, 1999) over 4,500 GM plants have been tested, and at least 40 including 11 varieties of corn, 11 varieties of tomatoes and 4 varieties of soybeans have cleared government reviews.

For biotech companies the rise of GM technology has meant boom times. Sales of GM seeds rose in value from $75 million in 1995 to $1.5 billion in 1998, and the crops they produce are turning up not only on produce shelves but also in processed foods from cookies to potato chips to baby food.

However, for sometime now countries in Europe which are the end users of many of the crops such as corn grown by U.S. farms have been putting up stiff resistance to the use of any GM foods at all, to the extent that there are bans on any GM foods being sent to Europe. In addition, none of the regulations imposed by the FDA requires any of these foods to have labels, nor if these foods are used by any manufacturers of, say, potato chips as to the fact GM elements have been used in their manufacture. Built-in pesticides of some of the GM crops have been killing the larva of the Monarch butterfly.

There could be a lot more than seasoning in your food. Everything from meat to fruit to baby food is being developed with the aid of genetic manipulation. Since the Federal government sees GM components as merely additives, they require little government oversight. Even the simplest meal could be loaded with small DNA tricks. And, nothing is labeled with this GM fact!

Appetizer

*Some tomato juice is made from tomatoes containing enzymes from Artic Flounder - an attempt to assist crops withstand low temperatures.

Entree

*Pork loins could come from hogs treated with human-growth hormones to help them grow bigger faster.
*Potatoes could include genes from the Bacillius thuringiensis, a naturally occuring bacterium toxic to insects.
Squash may be inoculated with watermelon and zucchini-virus genes to make the squash virus resistant.
*The corn in corn bread and other foods could contain a firefly gene, providing a phosphorescent marker to tag other implanted genes.

Desert

*The milk in that innocent-looking rice pudding may have been drawn from cows treated with genetically engineered bovine growth hormone to help boost milk production.

What can one do? Question your supplier as to the sources and if the foods you are buying have any of this stuff in them or have been subjected to GM. Press for proper labeling so you have a choice in what you purchase and know what's in it. and finally - you can grow your own foods. Growing your own food is fun, easy and above all you know what's in it! Just make sure you get the right seeds.
