MAGNETIC THERAPY

Magnetic Therapy is believed to have its beginnings in Asia.
Practitioners say magnetic or electromagnetic therapy is beneficial in treating
cancer, rheumatoid disease, sleep disorders, neck and shoulder pain and environmental
stress. Magnetics may be small enough to attach to the body or large enough to
fill a room. Our bodies apparently react to magnetism as "every system has its
own vibrations", thus, this therapy makes sense. In most everything our bodies
get out of balance and this is one approach to re-balance. By placing magnets near
or on an injury site, practitioners say a force field is created that encourages
muscle relaxation and increased blood flow, while reducing inflammation.
There are two common types of magnets used for magnetic therapy; one is ceramic ferrite
the other is neodymium. The ceramic ferrite magnet has a low gauss rating and the neodymium
has a high gauss rating. Magnets are measured by gauss, which is read through a gauss meter.
Magnets are measured at the center of the core. First thing to know
is that no matter how you cut a magnet there is a north side and a south
side, unless the magnet manufacturer charges the magnet with a north and
south on the same side, which can be done. There are many companies that
use this type of magnets, north and south on the same side creating a
Bi-pole effect. Products that are usually considered a Bi-pole are magnets north and
south facing the same direction on the same side.
Ceramic magnets are measured at 3950 gauss rating in the very center. The surface rating is
approximately 800 to 900 gauss rating. This pertains to any size of magnet either 1" round or 5"
round. The only difference is when it is larger it has a larger surface
area for a better coverage. Since ceramic can be heavy this explains why
these are used in small sizes in some products. One has to take into consideration the
penetration of a ceramic magnet when putting them in a product. As you put material over the magnet
it looses about 30% to 40% of its strength, for instance under a piece of 1.5mm thick
material. Instead of having a product that is to give a gauss rating of
800 you now have a product that is around 500 gauss rating for
each magnet. Many manufacturers do not take this into consideration. Thus, you have a product that is
not as effective.
The neodymium is a rare earth magnet. The material is made out of an iron boron and cobalt mixture,
which can hold larger gauss ratings. The neodymium magnet is measured the same way as a ceramic magnet.
The center core rating is 10,800 gauss rating no matter what size
it is. Same thing applies to this magnet as it does the ceramic magnets.
The surface rating is around 4000 gauss. If you place a piece of material
over this magnet it will loose some of its strength also. The percentage is the same. With material
over it you now have a product that carries a 3000 gauss rating. Compare this to a ceramic magnet
(500 gauss) or neodymium (3000 gauss) which one will be the most effective? The neodymium. You
have a product that is very effective, and although the neodymium magnet
costs 10 times more than the ceramic, you have a product that is going to
work more aggressively. It is very important the strength of magnets you are buying.
There are no side effects by using stronger magnets. That fact has been proven time after
time.
The different uses for magnets
There are two common ways magnets are used. One is a single pole, which means
north and south face opposite directions, and the other is Bi-pole
(alternating), which means north and south are on the same side facing the
same direction. Most companies use this effect (Bi-pole), which results in
a low cost and low gauss strength magnet. When using this type of magnets in
a product you get a lower cost in production. There are many companies that
use this procedure for their products. In reality you are paying for low cost product at a higher
price. The only time this alternating effect should be used is when you
are placing a product around an extremity area like the legs, arms, and
the neck. If you are trying to help bruises, cuts, strains and inflammatory areas you should use an
all north pole (single pole) product for best results. We have witnessed
best results with north pole products only. Rule of thumb: north pole
decreases and south pole increases. That is why you do not want to use a
Bi-pole product for certain aliments. (See chart below)
You may find magnet products without a coating. Ceramic will separate after being wet for too long
because it will rust from moisture. The best products are coated with
nickel giving them a lifetime use. These can get wet or be subjected to moisture
and they won’t rust like ceramic magnets. Plus, use on single pole magnets.
The question you need to ask yourself is would you buy a product at a high cost with low gauss rating
or buy a moderate cost product with high gauss rating that gets excellent
results.
